“…A 42 h exposure to volatile compounds from Allium ursinum revealed strong phytotoxic effects in terms of germination, and radicle elongation of Lactuca sativa, Amaranthus caudatus, and Triticum aestivum (Djurdjevic et al 2004). Likewise, Mao et al (2006) reported allelopathic effects of Vetiveria zizanioides against pea plants and citrus trees. However, the exact mechanism by which E. tereticornis volatile oil inhibits germination and growth is still unknown.…”

“…The allelopathic potential of some essential oils has been previously reported (De Feo et al 2002;Gniazdowska and Bogatek 2005;Mao et al 2006;Young and Bush 2009). Scrivanti et al (2003) investigated the allelopathic potential of the essential oil of the closely related species, S. areira, and found strong inhibitory activity of the root growth of Zea mays seedlings.…”

“…Two years ago, De Feo et al (2002), reported the inhibitory activity of the essential oil of Ruta graveolens on radish (R. sativus) germination and radicle growth. A rich sesquiterpene essential oil from vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) revealed strong phytotoxic effects on pea plants and citrus trees (Mao et al 2006). More recently, Kordali et al (2009) showed that the essential oils from two Achillea species have inhibitory effects on the germination and seeding growth of Amaranthus retroflexus, Cirsium arvense and Lactuca serriola.…”
