Vialactea Visual Analytics Tool for Star Formation Studies of the Galactic Plane

Abstract: We present a visual analytics tool, based on the VisIVO suite, to exploit a combination of all new-generation surveys of the Galactic Plane to study the star formation process of the Milky Way. The tool has been developed within the VIALACTEA project, founded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union, that creates a common forum for the major new-generation surveys of the Milky Way Galactic Plane from the near infrared to the radio, both in thermal continuum and molecular lines. Massive volumes of d… Show more

“…Calibrated spectra for each 30 × 30 tile are packed into eight files in the GILDAS format, distinguishing between observed line ( 12 CO (1-0) or 13 CO (1-0)), scan direction (along l or b), and filter banks (FB250 and FB100). The FQS spectral cubes are made available to the community also in the framework of the VIALACTEA 3 knowledge base (Molinaro et al 2016), accessible through the VIALACTEA visual analytics tool (Vitello et al 2018), which allows the inspection of our data in combination with other continuum and spectroscopic data of the Galactic plane from many surveys from infrared to radio frequencies.…”

“…VisIVO Visual Analytics [9] is an integrated suite of tools focused on handling massive and heterogeneous volumes of data coming from cutting-edge Milky Way surveys that span the entire Galactic Plane, homogeneously sampling its emission over the whole electromagnetic spectrum. The tool access data previously processed by data mining algorithms and advanced analysis techniques, providing highly interactive visual interfaces that offer scientists the opportunity for in-depth understanding of massive, noisy, and high-dimensional data.…”

“…These new IR Galactic plane surveys are characterized by a few arcsecs angular resolution, matching the ASKAP angular resolution, and have a very good sensitivity and sky coverage, to allow IR and radio counteparts to be efficiently identified and studied. Studies of this kind will be facilitated by visual analytics tools that have been recently developed to assist scientists in managing, visualizing and analysing large amount of data (Vitello al. 2018).…”
