Vibration-based fault diagnosis in rolling element bearings: ranking of various time, frequency and time-frequency domain data-based damage identi cation parameters

Abstract: A comparative study of various vibration signal-based damage identification parameters for rolling element bearings is undertaken. Defects of varying severity are seeded on the outer and inner races of a double-row angular contact bearing. The influence of a defect and its severity on the observed identification parameters is investigated using vibration data acquired from the bearing housing. A comparison among the various time domain, frequency domain and time-frequency domain parameters is made based on the… Show more

“…Changes in vibration characteristics of the structure like stiffness or damping are in most cases induced by damage occurred in a structure [65,66]. The type of sensor to be used for monitoring (laser vibrometers, velocity sensors, accelerometers, spectral emitted energy sensors, displacement sensors) depends on the frequency bandwidth of interest.…”

“…Additionally, Shakya et al [66] discuss different signal signatures with respect to their sensitivity to early damage detection and propagation, as well as their robustness. The comparison herein is done between features obtained by using HighFrequency Resonance (HFR), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) analysis, as well as crest factor, kurtosis, and root mean square (RMS).…”

“…The vibration signals in [14] go through a signal decomposition process after which the fault-related signal's spectrum is computed using the wavelet analysis. In [15], CWT is one of the signal processing methods compared for bearing diagnostics. They use a time slice of the CWT near the resonance frequency for detecting inner and outer race bearing defects.…”

“…In some past work application of wavelet can be found [4], [5]. It can be noticed that time-frequency analysis along with the static analysis of vibration signal can be used detect the fault in the bearing [6]- [8]. B.…”
