Vibration detection of local gear damage by advanced demodulation and residual techniques

Abstract: Damage detection in a gearbox is reported based on analysis of vibration signals measured on a running aircraft engine on a test bed. The experiment was stopped due to material being found on the magnetic chip detectors in the oil system. Subsequent inspection found a significant damage to a bevel gear inside the drive train system. Three damage detection techniques are applied to the vibration signals: advanced demodulation, advanced residual technique, and the classical residual technique. Fault indicators a… Show more

“…A traditional useful method to extract the signal's crack effect and determine its location is the residual signal method. 10 Figure 7 shows the residual signal of the signal shown in Figure 6. The residual signal is obtained by eliminating the gear mesh frequency and its harmonics from the original signal.…”

“…CBM is a maintenance program that attempts to monitor machinery health and recommends maintenance decisions based on the information, such as temperature, pressure, sound and vibration, collected through condition monitoring that do not interrupt normal machine operation [3,4]. Among the various techniques, vibration-based analysis methods are the most suitable and effective for bearings and gearboxes and thus have been widely studied and applied in rotating fault diagnosis [5][6][7][8]. Localized defects in bearings or gears include cracks, pits and spalls on the surfaces, which are mainly caused by the application of the repeated stresses on a finite volume of material, and then a fatigue crack begins below the surface of the metal and propagates toward the surface, eventually results in the loss of material from the surface to leave a small pit or spall [4,5].…”
