Over the last years, many aspects of people‘s lives have been moved to digitally supported environments. So far, the impact of these changes on their emotions and interpersonal processes remains largely unclear. As one essential and prevalent emotional process in social interaction, emotional contagion comprises the transmission of emotions between two or more individuals. In previous research, it has been studied in various interactive face-to-face contexts (e.g., teachers/students or psychotherapists/patients). In this study, we aimed to add to these findings by examining emotional contagion in dyadic online video conferences. We applied a lab-based experimental approach involving two participants interacting with each other via synchronized computers. In a structured interaction paradigm, they (N = 104 in n = 52 dyads) were prompted to talk to each other about recent personal experiences that made them angry, happy, and sad (in 3 conditions) while being filmed by webcams. The participants’ facial expressions during the interaction were analyzed using automated facial expression analysis software, and they retrospectively reported their subjective emotional experiences after each condition. Repeated measures analyses provided evidence of emotional contagion during the video conferences, as listeners reported to experience the speakers’ target emotions (anger, joy, sadness) significantly more frequently than any other emotion. We additionally employed cross-recurrence quantification analysis and found evidence for above chance co-occurrence of facially expressed anger and joy in both interaction partners. These findings point towards the existence of facial mimicry in online video conferences – a process that has been proposed as underlying mechanism of emotional contagion.

This study examines the challenges faced by speaking examiners in assessing students' speaking performance conducted virtually. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to speaking examiners to identify challenges they faced in administering the online speaking test. A focus group discussion to twenty five examiners were also conducted where they shared further about the challenges and how they dealt with the challenges. To confirm this, a questionnaire was distributed to 197 online speaking test takers. The study showed that the challenges the examiners faced were related to the poor internet connection and the technical problems from the participants' ends. These two factors caused some information delivered by the participants or examiners to be unclear or missing. This led the participants to ask the examiners to repeat some questions or vice versa. Although these challenges happened once in a while, they could interrupt the flow of the test itself and distract the focus of both examiners and participants. To deal with these two challenges, the examiners usually asked the participants to change their network or devices. There was this concern regarding the scoring of the participants' speaking performance if the troubles happened, but most examiners stated that the connection and technical problems did not really interfere with the scoring because they could identify the participants' speaking performance from their overall answers. Based on these findings, the institution could add some steps for device readiness check prior to the test to minimize the occurrence of the connection or technical problems that might inhibit the assessment.

Video conference technology (VCT) is a multimedia application that enables sound and image transmission, as well as real-time, duplex, and data communication. It facilitates communication between people in different places by using a camera, microphone, and monitor. In Malaysia, the use of this technology is rather recent and the spike usages of it were seen during the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020. Organisations were fast to adopted VCT in order to facilitate the organizational communications as employees were away from the office. In Malaysian public organisations, the Government have introduced the use of Google Meet as their main VCT tool. However, not all employees in the organisations were ready to adopt the technology and even some are still refusing it. Driven by the noted disparities in preparedness to embrace this technology, the study attempts to identify the variables impacting Google Meet's usage for leadership communication through an examination of usage patterns and demographic traits. Overall, the paper examines the demographic characteristics of 353 survey participants, their responses regarding Google Meet usage trends in a leadership communication context, and substantiates the widespread utilization of Google Meet for official purposes by managers in Malaysia through the presentation of data using charts and tables. The study also explores the subtle aspects of usage, including trends, frequency, and types of activities that supervisors, subordinates, and coworkers engage in on Google Meet. It is interesting to note that managers in Malaysian public organisations prefer to utilise Google Meet as an e-leadership tool, and they have expressed interest in using it going forward. The study's conclusions offer compelling new perspectives on how things work of this communication channel. Moreover, understanding the preferences of managers on e-leadership tools able to help to the development of policies that align with organizational goals.
