Video documentation of predators and nest defense at Bachman’s Sparrow nests

Abstract: Bachman's Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis) is a species of conservation concern throughout its range and an effective indicator of healthy pine savanna ecosystems in the southeastern United States. Their secretive nesting behavior means that many aspects of their nesting ecology, including specific knowledge of the nest predator community and nest defense behaviors are insufficiently described. This information is an important first step in determining the link between management practices and reproductive success… Show more

“…The growth of both the Northern Flicker and RCW may enhance numbers of other cavity‐nesting species given the important role that the Northern Flicker is thought to play in making natural RCW cavities available to larger cavity‐nesting species (Blanc & Walters 2008). The downward trend observed for the Tufted Titmouse may be a product of hardwood reduction efforts undertaken during the period when RCWs were reintroduced (Malone et al 2019).…”

“…Predator responses to manipulations of habitat structure can include both functional (e.g., altered foraging patterns) or numerical shifts (e.g., emigration to higher quality habitat; Klug et al 2010, Kirby et al 2016 a ). Given that predation is the dominant cause of nest mortality for Bachman's Sparrow (Malone et al 2019), structural changes that modify nest predator encounter patterns are likely to influence nest predation rates and could, in turn, influence population trajectories (Lyons et al 2015, Sedinger et al 2016, Palmer et al 2019).…”

“…
Bobcats (Lynx rufus) have broad diets; they hunt and scavenge a variety of birds, small and mid-sized mammals, and reptiles (Jones & Smith, 1979;Maehr & Brady, 1986;Tewes et al, 2002). In Florida, birds make up approximately 16% of bobcat prey items (Maehr & Brady, 1986) and their diets likely include eggs within nests (see Malone et al, 2019). Indeed, in Georgia they have been documented predating Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) nests, with eggs comprising up to 19% of their diet in Georgia (Schoch, 2003;Staller et al, 2005).
