Video Playback Speed Influence on Learning Effect From the Perspective of Personalized Adaptive Learning: A Study Based on Cognitive Load Theory

Abstract: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, online learning has become a new mode of learning that students must adapt to. However, the mechanisms by which students receive and grasp knowledge in the online learning mode remain unknown. Cognitive load theory (CLT) offers instructions to students considering the knowledge of human cognition. Therefore, this study considers the CLT to explore the internal mechanism of learning under the online mode in an experimental study. We recruited 76 undergraduates and randomly assig… Show more

“…Results show (see Table 3) that YouTube video is a popular source within the OER for students and more than 53% of students use it as a major source of OER materials. The primary reason people learn well via video is that the human brain processes video 60,000 times faster than it does text [15]. Around 20% mentioned, they preferred viewing online free books during their study, whilst the rest 27% mentioned they mainly bet on online free study materials to improve their understanding.…”

“…Recent studies consistently show that playing educational videos at 1.25× resulted in better learning outcomes than when played at normal speed (Lang et al, 2020;Mo et al, 2022), and the benefits and drawbacks of other speeds (e.g., 0.75× and 1.75×) are worth further investigation in order to incorporate them into our weighting strategy.…”

“…In this study we assume that playing at 1.25× speed will gain the same as playing at 1× speed for student learning. Recent studies consistently show that playing educational videos at 1.25× resulted in better learning outcomes than when played at normal speed (Lang et al, 2020) (Mo et al, 2022), and the benefits and drawbacks of other speeds (e.g. 0.75× and 1.75×) are worth further investigation in order to incorporate them into our weighting strategy.…”
