Video tracking in the extreme: A new possibility for tracking nocturnal underwater transparent animals with fluorescent elastomer tags

Abstract: Initially developed so that an individual could be recognized in mark-recapture studies of aquatic animals, fluorescent visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags are used here for a new application in ethometry: the study of the behavior of transparent animals in dim light or in darkness using automatic tracking technology. The application and validation of this multitracking method is tested in the context of research on the estuarine migratory behavior of the glass eel (Anguilla anguilla), a crucial point to bett… Show more

“…Delcourt et al . () demonstrated the feasibility of multitracking glass eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) as a transparent species using MVS and fluorescent visible implant elastomer (VIE). They used this system for analysing the swimming behaviour and weight losses according to the swimming behaviours of multiple glass eel ( Anguilla anguilla ).…”

“…With the multitracking system, animal groups can be studied at multiscale levels, where the focus is on one individual within a group (Ylieff and Poncin 2003; Delcourt et al. 2011) or considering the group as a single entity (Miller and Gerlai 2007, 2008) or as several subgroups (Couzin et al.…”

“…Using such techniques during night-time has been even more rarely done (Delcourt et al, 2011;Manenti et al, 2013). By combining continuous video-tracking and infra-red lighting, our study offers fine-scale information concerning individual movement activity in controlled laboratory conditions over the entire nocturnal activity period of two closely related fossorial toad species.…”
