Vietnamese version of the Dual Filial Piety Scale: preliminary validation in a student sample

Abstract: health psychology report • volume 8(3),  original article background Filial piety is a concept containing important ideas about how children should treat their parents. Its demands range from material to emotional requirements, and its structures are often generalized to apply to authority relationships beyond the family. The 16-item Dual Filial Piety Scale (DFPS) developed by Yeh and Bedford has been used in different cultural groups to measure individuals' filial piety attitude. The present investigation… Show more

“…It seems that "DFPM has been the most important theory, and the DFPS has been the most widely used scale in current filial piety research thus far" (Shi and Wang, 2019, p. 2). This is the reason why DFPS is translated to many languages, e.g., Chinese (Fu et al, 2020), Malay (FPS-M; Tan et al, 2019), South Korean (Sung, 1995), Spanish (Kao and Travis, 2005), Arabic (AFPS; Khalaila, 2010), Vietnamese (DFPS-V; Truong et al, 2020), and now, Polish (DFPS-PL). The factorial structure of the DFPS-PL as an example of the Western culture was not investigated before.…”

“…Responses were summed, with higher scores indicating greater levels of related FPB. The two-factor structure of this scale has been supported by exploratory factor analysis (Truong et al, 2020), and DFPBS scores were modestly positively correlated with another measure of the three-dimensional filial piety scale in a sample of Chinese working adults (Shi & Wang, 2019). The Chinese version of the DFPBS showed strong internal consistency in a previous study of Hong Kong university students, with Cronbach’s alphas of 0.90 for the reciprocal subscale and 0.81 for the authoritarian subscale (Chen, 2014).…”

“…Participants were asked to complete the Dual Filial Piety Scale (DFPS) developed by Yeh and Bedford (2003). We used the Polish adaptation by Różycka-Tran et al, unpublished and the Vietnamese adaptation by Truong et al (2020). Both adaptations were authorized by the authors of the original version of the tool.…”
