Viewers Change Eye-Blink Rate by Predicting Narrative Content

Abstract: Eye blinks provoke a loss of visual information. However, we are not constantly making conscious decisions about the appropriate moment to blink. The presence or absence of eye blinks also denotes levels of attention. We presented three movies with the exact same narrative but different styles of editing and recorded participants’ eye blinks. We found that moments of increased or decreased eye blinks by viewers coincided with the same content in the different movie styles. The moments of increased eye blinks c… Show more

“…To be more confident in concluding higher levels of social vigilantism are related to counterarguing against attitude-incongruent positions, future research could also assess whether higher levels of social vigilantism are associated with paying more attention to attitude-incongruent information. For example, eye movement or eye blink measures (e.g., Nakano et al, 2009 ; Andreu-Sánchez et al, 2021a , b ) would be more direct measures of attention.…”

“…In primates, including human, eye blink rate has been shown to be associated with attention, cognitive engagement and performance of complex behaviors (Jongkees and Colzato 2016;Ranti et al 2020;Andreu-Sánchez et al 2021;Dave et al 2021). Central dopaminergic inputs to the frontal cortex and basal ganglia modulate voluntary and spontaneous eye blink mechanisms during cognitive processes (Maffei and Angrilli 2018;Pajkossy et al 2018;Imburgio et al 2021).…”

“…Similarly, it is not obvious why a blink modulation is observed around perceptual switches of ambiguous stimuli where perception is not based on external sensory changes (Brych, Murali, & Händel, 2021b;Ito et al, 2003; van Dam & van Ee, 2005, 2006. Recent work suggests that indeed the content of information is more relevant for modulating blinking than the visual input specifics (Andreu-Sánchez, Martín-Pascual, Gruart, & Delgado-García, 2021). The presented visual and auditory studies on ambiguous percept serve to understand the function of spontaneous blink reduction.…”
