Vigor of canola seeds through quantification of CO2 emission

Abstract: Seed marks the beginning of grain production from cultivated crops. Ensuring seed quality is the priority in the field of seed technology. In this context, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of carbon dioxide concentration to classify Brassica napus seed lots of different quality resulting from various sowing dates. Seed lots were evaluated by percentage of normal plantlets and the germination rate index. CO 2 concentration was quantified in samples submitted to five periods of incubation at 40°… Show more

“…Castro (2011) observed this differentiation in maize seeds; Pereira (2012) in pepper and chili seeds; Dranski et al (2013), in canola seeds and Venske et al (2014) in cotton seeds. By the titulation method, it was also possible to separate statically the five lots of maize seeds in three levels of vigor.…”

“…Although studies have already presented methodological assumptions for the evaluation of CO 2 released by seeds, either via titration, micro calorimetry, gas chromatography (MENDES et al, 2009;BUCKLEY;HUANG, 2011, SCHABES;SIGSTAD, 2011), or by infrared spectroscopy (DRANSKI et al, 2013;DANTAS et al, 2015), the proposed method suggests that modification of the collection and expression of results obtained by a gas analyzer must be preceded by methodological validation procedures (KATAOKA et al, 2011).…”
