Violent behaviour, victimization, self-esteem and physical activity of Spanish adolescents according to place of residence: a structural equation model / Conducta violenta, victimización, autoestima y actividad física de adolescentes españoles en función del lugar de residencia: un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales

Abstract: This study aims to establish and verify an explanatory model for aggressive behaviour, self-esteem, victimization and physical activity in adolescents, and to use this explanatory model to analyse the association of place of residence with these variables. This research analysed 2,273 adolescents from the province of Granada (Spain) using the questionnaires Violent Behaviour at Schools, School Victimization Scale and Global Self-Esteem Scale. “…Baumeister [ 22 ] considers that self-esteem relevance has been exaggerated as this construct is not the cause, but rather the consequence of many conditions with which it has traditionally been related. That would explain the lack of congruence between multiple studies in which both low and high self-esteem predicts aggression [ 20 , 22 , 99 ]. Other studies also affirm that there is no relationship between self-esteem and aggression [ 100 ].…”

“…The analyses showed that global levels of selfesteem do not mediate the relationship between physical activity and aggression in youth, which is why the third hypothesis should be rejected. A study by Martínez-Martínez et al (2018) showed that relational and overt aggressiveness are related to selfesteem and physical activity. However, aggression and physical activity in this study were analysed using a different theoretical construct.…”

“…Violent behaviors in higher education are a focus of international research ( Itani et al, 2017 ; Dobarro et al, 2018 ; Martínez-Martínez et al, 2018 ; Esquivel-Santovena et al, 2020 ; Alsawalqa, 2021 ). Versatility and adaptability of violence in its physical, psychological or social forms is a challenge to the educational community in general.…”
