Viral Hepatitis in India

Abstract: Recent improvements in vaccines and treatments against viral hepatitis, an updated epidemiological understanding of the burden of viral hepatitis is needed to strategize interventions. A study using the data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimated morbidity and mortality for acute viral hepatitis, and for cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by viral hepatitis, by age, sex, and country from 1990 to 2013 [2]. Between 1990 and 2013, global viral hepatitis deaths increased from 0•89 million to 1•45 million… Show more

Similarly, Singapore implemented an immunization program in 1987 to vaccinate infants and school-aged students against HBV (13).…”

“…[ 23 ] The number of HBsAg carriers in India has been estimated to be over 40 million and chronic HBV infection accounts for 40% of hepato-cellular carcinoma (HCC) and 20–30% cases of cirrhosis in India. [ 24 ] National viral surveillance data for 2010–2013 found 13% nasopharygeal sample specimens sent for influenza virus testing to be positive and death estimates in the >65 years age group to be 51.1/100,000 population. [ 25 ] Several major epidemics of meningococcal disease have been reported, predominantly from the major cities and particularly from New Delhi.…”
