“…In particular, systems with similar climatological and hydrological conditions over the globe can be of high relevance to the energy sector. Hence the results presented here can guide decision making in hydropower management and risk reduction (Contreras et al, 2020;Wörman et al, 2020) by pointing out the seasons and lead times for which implementing ESP and/or GCM-MF hydrological forecasts with and without data assimilation can be strategic.…”

“…The entire potential electricity production can precisely match the consumption by spatiotemporal management and using the present hydropower in complement with suitable shares of solar and wind power. Previous studies on virtual energy storage have considered multienergy systems on a river basin size of 128,000 km 2 (Jing et al, 2023) or single energy sources (Wörman et al, 2020). However, here, we reveal the signi cant enhancement of the national potentials for complementarity between renewable energy mixes induced as the spatiotemporal coordination is extended across Europe over an area of 13,600,000 km 2 , hence emphasizing the VESG that may arise in the international energy trade.…”

“…Previous analyses showed that spatiotemporal coordination of hydropower production alone induces a VESG on the continental scale, which is twice that of the existing hydropower reservoirs (Wörman et al, 2020). The complementary effects of solar, wind and hydropower enhance the VESG even further, which in principle makes it possible to keep the energy storage demand well below the storage capacity of existing hydropower reservoirs (section 3.1).…”

“…The eastern region of China accounts for 41.56% of the total national consumption in 2020, while western regions account for 38.87% and 19.57%, respectively. The regional differences are large [14]. In terms of energy use consumption, the five provinces with the lowest energy consumption accounted for 16.54% of the country's energy consumption but their combined GDP only accounted for 8.28% of the country's GDP.…”
