Virtual versus Jaw Simulation in Oral Implant Education: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Aim We investigate the evaluation methods of teaching oral implant clinical courses and estimate the effectiveness of a virtual simulation platform. Methods Eighty second- and third-year undergraduates in Lanzhou University were recruited and randomized to either three experimental groups or one control group. The subjects undertook theoretical examinations to test their basic level of knowledge after training in similarly unified knowledge courses. Each student group then participated in an eight-hour operati… Show more

“…Characteristics of the selected studies are shown in ►Table 5. Implant placement manual skills were assessed in four studies, [68][69][70][71] and theoretical knowledge in two studies. 70,72 Results of all the selected studies showed significant improvement of implant education outcomes in both clinical skills and theoretical knowledge.…”

“…The primary objective of this research was to explore themes related to periodontal operation in a medical clinical teaching unit, based on comparation the traditional jaw simulation and virtual simulation, seeking for higher e cient manner and avert shortcomings in traditional teaching methods allows the students quickly practice new skills lasting the same amount of time [23]. Our experimental results showed that no matter promote theoretical knowledge or acquisition of periodontal supragingival scaling of clinical skills, the combination of virtual simulation and jaw model both were superior to traditional teaching methods.…”

“…Studies showed that future oral courses would benefit from the long-term inclusion of virtual practice exercises. [ 13 , 14 ] Students need to be exposed to more virtual patient cases to improve their clinical ability. Therefore, it is of great significance to design a practical system that uses VR technology to cultivate planting ability.…”
