Virtualized Congestion Control

Abstract: New congestion control algorithms are rapidly improving datacenters by reducing latency, overcoming incast, increasing throughput and improving fairness. Ideally, the operating system in every server and virtual machine is updated to support new congestion control algorithms. However, legacy applications often cannot be upgraded to a new operating system version, which means the advances are offlimits to them. Worse, as we show, legacy applications can be squeezed out, which in the worst case prevents the enti… Show more

“…5) Performance Isolation: Performance isolation is necessary in cloud environments where multiple tenants use shared network resources [74]- [76]. Isolation prevents selfish or malicious behavior that aims to either unfairly obtain more resources, such as by creating many flows or using custom aggressive transport protocols [77], [78], or to cause disruptions.…”

“…Moreover, TCP proxy goes against TCP end-to-end semantics. For instance, a barrier-based application may believe that all its packets were ACKed, and advance to the next phase, while they were not actually received, potentially causing errors in the application [3] [6]. Furthermore, WAN optimizer adopts compression to speed up transfers but this may add additional latency on service and require ISPs to offer co-operating decompression appliances [3].…”

“…Rather than proposing a new congestion control algorithm, our work investigates if congestion control can be implemented in a overlay manner. AC/DC [11] and vCC [6] are frontiers which converts default congestion control into operatordefined datacenter TCP congestion control. However, these two schemes target in intra-DC network environment and lack effective approaches to raise sending rate.…”

“…With the development of computer networks, more and more colorful businesses are presented to us, and these services require the support of data center. The amount of data that the data center network (DCN) needs to process is getting larger and larger, and an effective congestion control method can ensure the data center to operate normally. Therefore, DCN's congestion control has become one of the hot topics in the field of computer networks.…”
