Virtuous mess and wicked clarity: struggle in higher education research

Abstract: This article considers the value of clarity -of theory, method and purposes -in educational research. It draws upon the work of early critical theorist, Theodor Adorno, and particularly his notion of negative dialectics and his challenge to the traditional dichotomy of theory and practice. Using the notions of virtuous mess and wicked clarity, I argue that we need to accept the messy, contingent nature of the social world we research. “…All definitions are limited and it is crucial that we focus on issues and questions rather than search for neat definitions' (Dei, 2011b, 23). But it is also a feature of critical theory that it eschews artificial clarity and appreciates the epistemic messiness of the social world (McArthur, 2012). Critical theory rejects the false clarity of positivist approaches.…”

“…about what we are aiming to produce'. For many speakers at HECU5, one important goal of inquiry seemed to be 'struggling for greater social justice through and within higher education' (McArthur 2010). We need to reflect upon how the explicitly political nature of such a goal may influence the composition of our knowledge base.…”
