Virulence frequency to powdery mildew resistances in winter barley cultivars

Abstract: Virulence frequencies to powdery mildew resistances in winter barley cultivars mostly registered in the Czech Republic were studied in 2007 and 2008. Random samples of the air populations originating from winter and spring barley fields were obtained by means of a mobile version of a jet spore sampler. Conidia were sampled by driving across the Czech Republic. In total 349 isolates were studied and 17 differentials were used. The virulence frequencies to specific resistances of given cultivars showed wide rang… Show more

“…Their resistance was fully effective and probably different from Mlo, although it was not known whether all the genotypes carried one common resistance or whether each contained a different resistance. In 2008 the first virulent isolates on Kangoo were obtained (Dreiseitl 2008). Some of these isolates with new virulences were used in tests of 22 out of the 29 fully resistant spring barley genotypes.…”

“…Similarly, after detecting the first isolate with a new virulence to the resistance of Laverda in 2009 (Dreiseitl 2008(Dreiseitl , 2011d 15 fully resistant genotypes of winter barley were tested using this new pathotype. Eleven of the 15 genotypes (including some varieties used in this report) possessed identical, novel resistances that were characterized according to their compatible reaction to pathotypes with new virulences.…”

“…In 2008, the powdery mildew pathogen population was studied (Dreiseitl 2008) and the virulence frequency on resistance genes carried by winter barley cultivars was assessed. Furthermore, some spring barley genotypes were used, including cv.…”

“…For instance, the gene mlo confers full varietal resistance, whereas the gene Mla8 is totally ineffective to the pathogen population (Dreiseitl 2004) and is present even in most susceptible varieties (Dreiseitl 2007b). The effectiveness of individual resistance genes or their combinations can evaluated according to the infection or resistance of varieties in the field (Dreiseitl 2003(Dreiseitl , 2007c or determining frequencies of corresponding virulences in the pathogen population (Hovmøller et al 2000;Dreiseitl et al 2006;Dreiseitl 2008). Identifying resistance genes, determining their actual effectiveness in the field and assessing frequencies of corresponding virulences provide comprehensive information which, together with data on distribution of varieties with given resistance genes, can predict the effectiveness of the corresponding resistance.…”
