Objectives Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains LAA-positive are important cause of human infection. The capability to adhere to epithelial cells is a key virulence trait, and genes codified in LAA pathogenicity island could be involved in the adhesion during the pathogenesis of LAA-positive STEC strains. Thus, our objectives were to compare hes-negative and hes-positive STEC strains in their adherence capability to epithelial cells (HEp-2) and to evaluate the expression levels of the hes, iha, and tpsA in the bacteria adhered and non-adhered to HEp-2 cells. These genes are encoded in LAA, and are virulence factors that participate in adhesion and autoaggregation. Results We could not observe differences between the adhesion of strains but also in the expression level of of hes, iha, and tpsA. Genes encoded in LAA contribute to the adhesion phenotype though the expression of STEC adhesins is a coordinated event that depends not only the strain but also on the environment as well as its genetic background. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that LAA ,the most prevalent PAI among LEE-negative STEC strains, plays a role in pathogenesis.

Los ambientes de producción animal presentan factores que afectan directa o indirectamente las condiciones de vida, nutrición, reproducción o el crecimiento de diferentes especies animales, así como propicia el desarrollo bacteriano dando lugar a infecciones por microrganismos de importancia mundial en salud pública, como lo es Escherichia coli bacteria con potencial de virulencia y resistencia que conllevan al difícil control y tratamiento en producción, y a la circulación de cepas entre especies animales y el hombre. El objetivo de la revisión fue describir genes de virulencia y su patogenicidad expresados por Escherichia coli, que circulan con mayor prevalencia en los ambientes de producción en diferentes especies animales. Se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura en las bases de datos Medline, Lilacs, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Acopas, SciELO y Dialnet, se realizó una búsqueda utilizando una combinación de palabras claves validadas en español e inglés (gen, Escherichia coli, food chain, animal production, virulence, poultry, pathogenicity, cattle diseases, microbial drug resistance). Se identificó que las variaciones de Escherichia coli (serotipos) presentan mecanismos de virulencia relacionados con la generación de patologías graves en animales jóvenes como la producción de colibacilosis con altos potenciales en la producción de toxinas, adhesinas y citotoxinas encargadas del daño celular, muerte y pérdidas económicas a los productos; debido a ello las medidas preventivas toman un papel fundamental en el cuidado de los animales para la generación de productos con calidad e inocuidad.
