Virus-Induced Gene Silencing of the Eggplant Chalcone Synthase Gene during Fruit Ripening Modifies Epidermal Cells and Gravitropism

Abstract: Eggplant ( Solanum melongena L.) fruits accumulate flavonoids in their cuticle and epidermal cells during ripening. Although many mutants available in model plant species, such as Arabidopsis thaliana and Medicago truncatula, are enabling the intricacies of flavonoid-related physiology to be deduced, the mechanisms whereby flavonoids influence eggplant fruit physiology are unknown. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) is a reliable tool for the study of flavonoid function in fruit, and in this study, we success… Show more

“…C4H and CHS are vital functional genes in existing studies regarding the process of anthocyanin genes [6,8,75]. However, CHS and C4H could be assembled only by the de novo method, which suggests that the reference genome, CBS 593.65 [35], may not contain these two genes.…”

“…VIGS is a reverse-genetics method based on RNA-mediated antiviral plant defense that has been used to rapidly identify gene function in plants [25]. The e ciency of VIGS in inducing endogenous gene silencing is related to multiple factors, such as the correct viral vectors, the characteristics of the target gene, the infection buffer, the activity of Agrobacterium in the bacterial suspension, and the plant growth environment suitable for silencing [26].…”
