Visceral fat decreased by long-term interdisciplinary lifestyle therapy correlated positively with interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor–α and negatively with adiponectin levels in obese adolescents

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of cytokine expression in correlation with visceral and subcutaneous fat in obese adolescents admitted to long-term interdisciplinary weight loss therapy. The study was a longitudinal clinical intervention of interdisciplinary therapy. Adolescents (18, aged 15-19 years) with body mass indexes greater than the 95th percentile were admitted and evaluated at baseline and again after 1 year of interdisciplinary therapy. Visceral and subcutaneous fat was analyzed by… Show more

“…Several studies show that exercise training decreases insulin resistance and improves glucose control and diabetes, concomitantly increasing the adiponectin levels and the protein expression of insulin receptors in the skeletal muscle [18,38-40]. These effects were observed in the present study after 3 months of exercise training, but were no longer evident after 6 months.…”

“…On the other hand, acute and chronic exercise may be an option of non-pharmacological treatment for metabolic dysfunction and sleep disorders [12,16-18], especially in older individuals [19]. These effects promoted by exercise training are intensity, volume and duration dependent [20].…”

“…Indeed, increased abdominal obesity has been associated with lower levels of adiponectin [1,25,39,40] and adiponectin was negatively associated with visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio [41]. The association between hypoadiponectinaemia and increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT) seems to appear early in life [33].…”
