The viscosities of dimethyl ether (DME, C2H6O) and of the fluorinated propene isomers 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R1234yf, C3H2F4) and trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R1234ze(E)) were measured in a combined temperature range from 242 K to 350 K at saturated liquid conditions. The instrument was a sealed gravitational capillary viscometer developed at NIST for volatile liquids. Calibration and adjustment of the instrument constant were conducted with n-pentane. The repeatability of the measurements was found to be approximately 1.5 %, leading to a temperature-dependent estimated combined standard uncertainty of the experimental data between 5.7 % at 242 K for dimethyl ether and 2.6 % at 340 K for R1234yf. The measurements were supplemented by ab initio calculations of the molecular size, shape, and charge distributions of the measured compounds. The viscosity results for dimethyl ether were compared with literature data. One other data set measured with a sealed capillary viscometer and exceeding the present results by up to 7 % could be reconciled by applying the vapor buoyancy correction. Then, all data agreed within the estimated uncertainty of the present results. Viscosities for the fluorinated propene isomers deviate up to 4 % from values predicted with the NIST extended corresponding-states model. The viscosities of the two isomers do not scale with their dipole moments. While the measured viscosity of R1234ze(E) with the lower dipole moment is close to that of R134a, the refrigerant to be replaced, that of R1234yf with the higher dipole moment is up to 25 % lower. The viscosity of dimethyl ether is compared with those of water and methanol.

The surface tension and liquid viscosity of two binary refrigerant mixtures 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R32) (1) + 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R1234yf) (2) and R32 (1) + trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoroprop-1-ene (R1234ze) (2) have been measured from 293 K to the critical point by using the surface light scattering (SLS) method. The experimental data were correlated as a function of temperature and mole fraction of the pure components. For the surface tension of R32+R1234yf and R32+R1234ze, the average absolute deviations are 0.053 and 0.029 mN•m −1 , respectively. As for the liquid viscosity, the relative percentage average absolute deviations are 0.86 and 1.01%, respectively.

SUMMARYA three-parameter corresponding states (CS) model is developed, importing methods formerly studied for the volumetric representation of #uids. The three parameters are critical temperature, pressure and a viscosity scaling factor de"ned from experimental saturated liquid viscosity data or, when these are unavailable, from a single experimental point. Two reference #uids are chosen both for their factor value and because the corresponding viscosity dedicated equations (VDE) are available. On the basis of the three-parameter CS model proposed by Teja et al. for volumetric properties, the reduced viscosity of a third #uid is obtained in reduced P, ¹ variables interpolating that of the two reference #uids, calculated at the same reduced temperature and pressure, by .Where the transport property is known along the saturation line at least, an improvement is introduced by correcting the factor with a temperature-dependent function "tted on these data. The model is then extended to mixtures using the one--uid model approach, in a completely predictive mode with respect to the mixture.The accuracy for both pure #uids and mixtures is comparable with that of the reference #uids' equations, while in the unimproved and improved mode the amount of input data is very limited. Also, comparison with a four-parameter CS model and with an ECS model con"rms the accuracy of the present technique. Considering the predictive nature of the model and the scattering of the available experimental data, the mean accuracy is good and more than satisfactory for the purposes of technical applications.
