Titanium dioxide is the most used photocatalyst in wastewater treatment; its semiconductor capacity allows the indirect production of reactive oxidative species. The main drawback of the application of TiO2 is related to its high band-gap energy. The nonmetal that is most often used as the doping element is nitrogen, which is due to its capacity to reduce the band-gap energy at low preparation costs. There are multiple and assorted methods of preparation. The main advantages and disadvantages of a wide range of preparation methods were discussed in this paper. Different sources of N were also analyzed, and their individual impact on the characteristics of N–TiO2 was assessed. The core of this paper was focused on the large spectrum of analytical techniques to detect modifications in the TiO2 structure from the incorporation of N. The effect of N–TiO2 co-doping was also analyzed, as well as the main characteristics that are relevant to the performance of the catalyst, such as its particle size, surface area, quantum size effect, crystalline phases, and the hydrophilicity of the catalyst surface. Powder is the most used form of N–TiO2, but the economic benefits and applications involving continuous reactors were also analyzed with supported N–TiO2. Moreover, the degradation of contaminants emerging from water and wastewater using N–TiO2 and co-doped TiO2 was also discussed.

The Ce‐doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by the sol–gel method. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized by sophisticated analytical techniques such as XRD, FESEM with EDX, HR‐TEM, XPS, FTIR, TGA, and UV–visible spectroscopy, which gives structural features, morphology, elemental composition, and thermal stability of prepared nanoparticles. Based on the analysis, we conclude that increasing the dopant content of cerium in TiO2 results in a decrease in particle size, increase in thermal stability, and decrease in band gap. Further, on increasing the dopant content of cerium, there is an increase in photocatalytic activity due to changes in structural features due to doping, and 5 mol% Ce‐doped TiO2 has shown nearly four times higher photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 for degradation of tetracycline. In this study, the photocatalytic activity and kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of antibacterial agent tetracycline have been studied by using these prepared catalysts. Further, effects of different parameters such as change in pH and change in concentration of tetracycline and amount of catalyst loading have been studied for the degradation of tetracycline. Also, Ce‐doped TiO2 has shown good photocatalytic efficiency for degradation of a mixture of textile dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and brilliant green) and for degradation of a mixture of emerging contaminants (tetracycline, diclofenac, and triclosan).

In this work, bare or mixed environmentally non-benign organic pollutants have been decontaminated using borondoped TiO 2 nanoparticles (B@TiO 2 ). B@TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) with varying content of boron (0.0 to 7.0 mol %) are synthesized using sol-gel method. These NPs are characterized by using different tools. XRD reveals the high crystalline nature with formation of anatase phase and also shows slight increase in crystallite size with increase in boron content in TiO 2 host lattice. The optical shift towards higher wavelength increases with increase of boron doping and hence corresponding decrease in optical band gap of doped NPs is confirmed. FTIR and TGA studies reveal the increase of surface hydroxylation of NPs with increase in dopant content. B@TiO 2 samples have been used for the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A, rhodamine B, methylene blue, methyl orange and mixture of these three dyes under sunlight illumination. 7.0 mol % B@TiO 2 has shown the best activity than other prepared samples. Rate of degradation of mixed dyes using 7.0 mol % B@TiO 2 is about seven times higher to that of bare TiO 2 and also shown higher rate than other doped samples.
