Visible microactuation of a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy by focused laser beam

Abstract: We used a focused laser beam to achieve large amplitude and localized controlled actuation in a microstructure made of a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. Significant deformation (18 µm) was achieved at low laser power (20 mW) and the amplitude of actuation could be linearly controlled with the laser power. The rapid mechanical actuation shows no apparent sign of fatigue even after a million continuous oscillatory cycles. As a possible mechanism, we propose that the deformation of structure was induced by a co… Show more

“…On the other hand, light can be used as a precise stimulus by adjusting to a suitable wavelength, direction, and intensity, thus allowing it to be controlled rapidly and remotely 8. Using the deformation of these materials, one can directly convert light energy into mechanical energy through photochemistry under ultraviolet9 (UV)‐, infrared10 (IR)‐, and visible‐light11 irradiation or through light‐induced heating 12. For example, Lendlein used UV light to facilitate shape‐memory effects using a reversible [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction 9a.…”

“…Many researchers have studied the shape recovery behavior i.e. thermally induced actuation, as shown in figure 1, using different heating methodologies, such as Joule heating [34][35][36][37][38][39], hot fluidic actuation [18,[40][41][42], laser actuation [43][44][45][46], electromagnetic heating [47,48] and RF electromagnetic actuation [49,50]. In general, Joule heating of SMA element is simple and used widely but requires electrical insulation from other metal/conductive components for safety and better energy efficiency.…”

“…The phase formation of a particular CoNiAl alloy is strongly dependent on the heat treatment conditions as well as its chemical composition . We already worked on magnetization on similar composition as a function of annealing. Here, we give a microstructural evidence of the effect of highest post‐annealing temperature and its effect on physical properties like martensitic transformation temperature ( T M ) and magnetization (M) on such a system.…”
