Vision-Based Front Vehicle Detection and Its Distance Estimation

Abstract: Vision-based driver assistant systems are very promising in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This paper will propose a system that can detect front vehicles and estimate the nearest car distance from the host car. In a companion paper 11, we have developed a scene analysis module that deals with scene segmentation and natural object labeling of forward-looking images by the use of fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) and fuzzy inference techniques. Based on this technique, the proposed system can dete… Show more

“…However, these sensors give only point information for the detected target and it is very difficult to recognize the class of the detected object. Camera-based perception methods have been proposed to detect and recognize moving objects while localizing the object's position with prior perspective information [5,6]. Currently, many researchers have been working toward stereo vision-based approaches in order to provide systems with more reliable detection and localization performance [7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…If drivers faced with emergency driving situations have reliable information provided, the number of car accidents could be reduced dramatically. Such information requires various sensors such as Radar [1], Lidar [2], cameras [3], and GPS to perceive aspects of the external environment. Actually, Team Tartan Racing's vehicle "Boss", Carnegie Mellon University's winning entry in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, is equipped with 13 different perception sensors [4].…”

“…As a matter of course, a vision system can also estimate the distance of an object for itself. One method is to utilize perspective information of a road or an object size [5][6][7]. However, it needs a priori information such as a road status or the true size of the target object.…”
