Vision Health-Related Quality of Life in Chinese Glaucoma Patients

Abstract: This cross-sectional study evaluated VRQOL in Chinese glaucoma patients and the potential factors influencing VRQOL. The VRQOL was assessed using the Chinese-version low vision quality of life questionnaire. Visual field loss was classified by the Hodapp-Parrish-Anderson method. The correlations of VRQOL to the best corrected visual acuity and the VF loss were investigated. The potential impact factors to VRQOL of glaucoma patients were screened by single factor analysis and were further analyzed by multiple r… Show more

“…To date, many conflicting results have been reported as to whether BVA or WVA has a greater influence on VRQOL. Our results are consistent with previous reports (Gutierrez et al 1997;McKean-Cowdin et al 2007;Okamoto et al 2014;Sawada et al 2014;Peters et al 2015;Zuo et al 2015;Alqudah et al 2016) indicating that the better eye has a greater influence on VRQOL than the worse eye. However, other studies (Wren et al 2009;Zhou et al 2014) reported no difference between the impacts of the two eyes on VRQOL, or even that the worse eye was more strongly associated with VRQOL (Hyman et al 2005;Murata et al 2013;Hirneiss 2014).…”

“…Similarly, a study in China found that the impact of education on VRQOL is significant only in patients with secondary school or higher degrees, compared with those who were illiterate or had primary school educational levels. 22 However, Lisboa et al 6 reported that whether or not the patient had an educational degree of high school or above did not significantly affect VRQOL. Education may have to reach a certain level to have significant impact on improving the a Income stratification: low: o30 000 New Taiwan Dollars (NTD); middle: 30 000-60 000 NTD; high: 460 000 NTD.…”

“…Besides, low income was associated with decreased scores of QOL in all domains. Patients with low income are unable to buy all the medicines they need, can't make the necessary surgical procedures that maintain the stability of their health, cannot pay for the doctor in their private clinics and have worse availability to different services (Zuo et al 2015). Glaucoma patients with higher education level had better mean scores in all QOL domains.…”
