Vision-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Complete Homonymous Hemianopia Post Stroke

Abstract: Identification of the significant areas of visual difficulties and their effects on quality of life is important as it can help better address the patients' rehabilitation needs. The current study identifies the need for orientation and mobility training as well as independent living rehabilitation in patients with HH to help address the difficulties in their vision-specific quality of life and maximize their residual vision.

“…Additionally, with the need to evaluate the effectiveness of visual interventions, the ability to determine if these interventions influence quality of life measures positively would be beneficial. 16 In the broader field of vision research, vision -specific QoL measures have been developed. These were developed in recognition of when measuring outcomes following rehabilitation in people with visual loss, quality of life should be measured, as opposed to measuring performance of specific activities that were traditionally used.…”

“…The NEI VFQ-25 has been shown to have good correlation with other visual function questionnaires such as the Visual Activities Questionnaire (VAQ), but only one of the questions relates to peripheral vision function and therefore there is scope for bias if relying on just the NEI VFQ-25 to assess patient perception of their peripheral vision. 16 certain subscales. [17][18][19] Studies have however suggested that glare contributes to reduced contrast sensitivity and that this will play a role in affecting visual function.…”
