VISIR deployment in undergraduate engineering practices

Abstract: Practical sessions are the backbone of qualification in engineering education. It leads to a better understanding and allows mastering scientific concepts and theories. The lack of the availability of practical sessions at many universities and institutions owing to the cost and the unavailability of instructors the most of the time caused a significant decline in experimentation in engineering education over the last decades. Recently, with the progress of computer-based learning, remote laboratories have bee… Show more

“…These studies, and other previous work in the area [21]- [23], indicate that student satisfaction improves when teachers are experienced with VISIR, the documentation and support materials (e.g., help files, videos) are adequate, and/or the tools are properly explained. Usability issues vary with time and local conditions.…”

The fact each LA HEI possess a VISIR system is expected to contribute to an increased sense of ownership, both by students and teachers, promoting its adoption.…”

“…By now, thousands of students have already used VISIR, with learning gains (Tawfik, et al, 2011;, but in most cases, this resource was not used simultaneously with other resources, such as, simulation and hands-on lab, or calculus, except for one small scale didactical experiment (Viegas, Lima, Alves, & Gustavsson, 2014;Lima, Alves, Viegas, & Gustavsson, 2015;Alves, Viegas, Lima, & Gustavsson, 2016). In this case, it was used an enquiry based teaching and learning methodology and the course curriculum as well as the didactical implementation design indication were described.…”

“…1 A brief description about the VISIR project was earlier presented by "IEEE Transaction on Learning Technologies" in [3]. Owing to the remarkable results achieved in its implementation and deployment in undergraduate engineering education at many universities [4][5][6][7], as well as the widespread interest and the demands by the researchers for a further information and description of the project, this paper was released to accommodate these demands and to be an extension that updates the previously published one [3]. The paper compares the system with other emerging approaches and details thoroughly all the stages of the project development shedding light on its hardware and software aspects, operation cycle, provided services, installation, deployment experiences, drawbacks, and ongoing and future works.…”
