Visual detection and feature recognition of underwater target using a novel model-based method

Abstract: Imaging is an important means to explore the ocean for underwater robotics. The diffuse attenuation coefficient of light in water is one of the most important optical properties of seawater. This article presents a model-based method to analyze the causes of distortion of underwater images. We built a platform for underwater image acquisition and target recognition. The model coefficients were calibrated with images captured underwater and in air. Experiments were carried out to verify the designed algorithm a… Show more

“…The most common underwater workflow followed in the literature comprises submarine environment modeling, image preprocessing and the main algorithmic stages [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. This work further integrates relevant stages, such as camera optics and image mosaicking, to provide a generalized underwater framework while detecting critical issues throughout the process.…”

“…Generally, vision-based underwater target detection methods can be divided into two categories: traditional methods and deep learning based methods. Traditional underwater target detection methods include image feature matching recognition [4], [5], general image segmentation [6], [7], and detection and recognition based on color and shape [8], [9], [10]. Sun et al [8] designed an autonomous recognition system based on the color and shape of the target for the real-time detection and tracking of robotic fish.…”

“…However, poor visibility, complex terrain environment, and high water pressure limit underwater operation. 1 Underwater operation needs to be completed with the help of professional underwater equipment, and thus underwater vehicles are emerged at the right moment. Underwater detection operation can be implemented for decoupling operation and long-term and large-scale autonomous underwater navigation, detection, and collision avoidance, which has the advantages of high efficiency, strong controllability, safety, and intelligence.…”
