Visual dysfunction is underestimated in patients with acquired brain injury

Abstract: Visual impairments are common after acquired brain injury, but some patients do not define their problems as vision-related. A structured questionnaire, covering the most common visual symptoms, is helpful for the rehabilitation team to facilitate assessment of visual changes.

“…To monitor for ocular side effects, screening should include questions about chronic headache, fatigue, dizziness, reading difficulties, and trouble navigating the surrounding environment. The Vision Interview (TVI) is a questionnaire developed to screen for visual deficits in a brain injury program and includes questions to identify patients with impairments that may otherwise be missed [12]. This case raises awareness as to the importance of monitoring for ocular side effects while on amantadine, particularly in patients with brain injury or prior ophthalmologic pathology.…”

“…Visual-related symptoms were assessed with the Vision Interview (VI), which is an adapted and translated version of "Die Anamnese Zerebral betingter Sehestörungen" (25), intended to pick up visual disturbances after ABI and described in detail previously (13). The VI has 18 questions, 16 of which cover the most common visual symptoms and their influence on visualbased activities.…”

“…Visual impairments (VIs) after stroke include visual field loss, eye movement disorders, loss of central vision and perceptual disorders. Symptoms of VIs include sudden loss of vision, double vision, reading difficulties, reduced balance or mobility, clumsiness or inattention of visual information [6,7]. However, many stroke survivors do not relate these symptoms to impaired vision but attribute them to other problems, such as age, fatigue, and limb weakness [6].…”
