Visual field improvement in neglect after virtual reality intervention: a single-case study

Abstract: A patient suffering from visuo-spatial neglect was investigated as a special interest case during a study on the effectiveness of "restorative approaches" after visual field loss. This patient trained with our newly developed Virtual Reality (VR) system "Salzburg Visual Field Trainer" for 254 days. Perimetric results show a visual field expansion of 48.8% (left eye) and 36.8% (right eye) translating to an improvement of approximately 5.5° to 10.5° of visual angle. Further, subjective self-report shows improvem… Show more

“…We therefore argue that a possible explanation for the partly divergent findings in previous studies on RT should be considered against this background. This hypothesis is also based on our recent findings on RT and neglect (55). We argue that RT could have a potential positive therapeutic effect for lesions in higher cortical areas, such as in parietal areas impairing attention.…”

“…These limitations of SAP have been studied in glaucoma (Glen et al, 2014) and neuro-ophthalmic case findings (Szatmáry et al, 2002). Consequently, approaches using eye-movements (Murray et al, 2009;Mazumdar et al, 2014;Leitner et al, 2021b;Mao et al, 2021;Soans et al, 2021;Tatham et al, 2021) including tablet-based (Jones et al, 2019(Jones et al, , 2021 and VR perimetry techniques (Deiner et al, 2020;Leitner and Hawelka, 2021;Leitner et al, 2021a;Narang et al, 2021;Razeghinejad et al, 2021) have been developed.…”
