Three broad areas for considering documentary within the framework of media literacy education are developed here. They are, (i) using documentary analysis to teach principles of media literacy around content and form, (ii) teaching documentary production as a means to teach components of media literacy, and (iii) teaching with documentaries
about
media literacy topics. The three are deeply intertwined arenas of learning that, when combined and presented within an open and creative educational environment, create an immersive learning experience and, more specifically, create a comprehensive media literacy education about visual and audio documentaries.
