Visual or computer-based measurements: important for interpretation of athletes’ ECG

Abstract: Abnormal ECGs were more than twice as common after computer-based than after visual measurements. Such a difference will markedly influence the number of athletes who need further examinations. Reference values may need adjustments dependent on measurement methods.

“…Secondly we examined it dichotomously at the highest amount of stress compared to the two lower tertiles. Cohen’s Kappa was used to assess inter-scale agreement on perceived stress in tertiles and dichotomously (32, 33). Due to the nonparametric distribution of the data, the Spearman’s rank correlation was used to assess the correlation between the scores of the Assessment of Partner/Other Support and Self Esteem scales from the PPP were tested with the total scores of the PSS and Perceived Stress score of the PPP.…”

“…In our study all digital samples were displayed, and the on‐screen calipers measured durations and amplitudes down to 2 ms and 0.05 mV, respectively. Hence, small deflections as T‐wave inversions ≥ 1.0 mm and Q waves ≥ 3.0 mm were easier to detect (Berge et al., ). Third, the visual assessment both on paper and on‐screen has subjective components: where to start and end a measurement and in choice of lead.…”
