Visual Perception of Agricultural Cultivated Landscapes: Key Components as Predictors for Landscape Preferences

Abstract: This study focuses on the visual perception of agricultural cultivated landscapes by examining the role of five specific landscape components as predictors of visual preferences: field size, lot shape, land texture, crop texture and built elements. The Lower Galilee in northern Israel was chosen as the study area. The landscape was viewed by 90 participants using a photographic representation. Overall, the preference ratings indicated a relatively positive judgment of the agricultural cultivated landscapes. Mo… Show more

“…While studies with reference to visual quality of agricultural Rechtman 2013) and rural landscapes García-Llorente et al 2012;) are relatively abundant in Northwest Europe, little attention has been given to Southeast European landscapes. Featuring highly varied natural environments and complex socio-cultural and land-use history, Southeast Europe accounts for a significant portion of landscape diversity in Europe (Mücher et al 2010;Perko and Ciglič 2015) characterised by high visual quality (Ramos and Pastor 2012).…”

“…Those rural landscapes that have lost their original character (i.e., those functional characteristics linked to maintaining biodiversity and agricultural production of food for humans) are among those, which require planned interventions (Brooker, 2002;Gabellini et al, 2007;Rechtman, 2013). Many of these are on the outskirts of urban areas.…”

“…The questionnaire scales used in the paper refer to existing well-established scales, including the Rural Nature Perception Scale, Place Attachment Scale and Restorative Experience Scale. Some other scholars have proposed concepts such as landscape naturalization including proportion of water bodies, proportion of vegetation, shape of vegetation, sense of wilderness experience, and management as indicators of nature perception ( Tveit et al, 2006 ), as well as indicators such as landscape patchiness and continuity as judging criteria ( Rechtman, 2013 ). Meanwhile, some scholars have also pointed out that rich biodiversity in rural landscapes can make people have stronger landscape preferences ( Stokstad et al, 2016 ).…”
