Visual recovery after retinal detachment with macula-off: is surgery within the first 72 h better than after?

Abstract: Our study suggests that 1. After 10 days of central visual acuity loss, the final visual outcome is clinically comparable and independent of further delay of surgery up to 30 days. 2. Eyes treated up to 3 days after onset of loss of central vision have better final visual acuity than eyes with longer lag time. However, we did not find statistically significant differences within the first 3 days. 3. Surgery for macula-off retinal detachment may therefore most likely be postponed without compromising the patien… Show more

“…As soon as central detachment is present, improvement of central vision often remains compromised on account of permanent functional damage to the fovea. Several studies have concluded that the final functional outcome after surgical repair of fovea-off RRD is time dependent [1][2][3]9].…”

“…In the management of foveal detachment, the time until surgery is the most important prognostic factor for final visual acuity (FVA) after reattachment [1,2]. Several factors, such as height of foveal detachment, age, and preoperative visual acuity, have been determined to have an impact on visual outcomes.…”

“…In cases of symptom duration >10 days, functional outcome may be affected adversely [6][7][8][9][10][11] . A recent study concluded that eyes treated up to 3 days after onset of loss of central vision have better final visual acuity than eyes with longer lag time [12] .…”

“…While many previous reports have studied recovery of visual acuity following successful surgery to repair RRD eyes [6][7][8][9][10] , few studies have investigated the reKeywords Light sensitivity · Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment · Humphrey perimetry · Total deviation · Postoperative recovery Abstract Purpose: To investigate whether postoperative light sensitivity recovers completely to the level prior to the development of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) after successful surgery. Methods: We retrospectively studied 44 eyes of 44 patients with RRD who were successfully operated and who underwent Humphrey central 30-2 perimetry postoperatively.…”
