Visualization of Coherent Destruction of Tunneling in an Optical Double Well System

Abstract: We report on a direct visualization of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT) of light waves in a double well system which provides an optical analog of quantum CDT as originally proposed by Grossmann, Dittrich, Jung, and Hänggi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 516 (1991)]. The driven double well, realized by two periodically-curved waveguides in an Er:Yb-doped glass, is designed so that spatial light propagation exactly mimics the coherent space-time dynamics of matter waves in a driven double-well potential governed b… Show more

“…In both CDT and DL, the degrees of suppression and localization depend on the adjustable driving parameters, thereby creating the possibility of manipulating quantum states by means of periodic laser driving or a terahertz electric field [7,12,13]. Although most CDT and DL work refers to electronic systems, many of the phenomena are generic and also occur in atomic [14][15][16][17] and optical [18][19][20] systems with ac driving due to phase modulation of the counterpropagating waves that create the lattice.…”

“…10 In addition to this, DL has also been observed in diverse physical systems such as a cold atomic gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice, 11 an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, 12 and light in curved waveguide arrays. [13][14][15] Further, DL has been discussed in double-quantum-dot molecules, 16 one-dimensional lattices under the influence of ac electric and magnetic fields, 17 Cooper pairs in Josephson qubits, 18 and strongly correlated electron systems. 19 The recent progress in THz light sources has encouraged experimental studies of coherent control of excitonic states in undoped SLs with a relatively weak THz field.…”

“…In the last few years, much attention has been paid to explore a lot of quantum effects like electronic Bloch oscillations [2,3], Landau-Zenner tunnelling [4], coherent control of quantum tunnelling [5][6][7], Wannier-Stark ladders [8] and control of quantum mechanical decay with Zeno and Anti-Zeno dynamics [9][10][11] in macroscopic photonic structures both theoretically and experimentally. To this end, a number of quantum-optical analogies based on recent day developments have been presented at length in an impressive review paper [12].…”
