Visualization of viruses in tumors of rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax

Abstract: A virus of typical Herpesvirus morphology was found in papillomas and carcinomas of smelt Osmerus mordax. lcosahedral unenveloped viral nucleocapsids 95 nm in diameter were found in the enlarged nuclei of infected cells. The nuclei contained dispersed granular chromatin that appeared to be producing viral nucleoids. Most cytoplasmic viral particles were enveloped in electron-dense material, and surrounded by a smooth-membraned vesicle. Some vesicles containing viruses were associated with the enlarged Golgi ap… Show more

“…A papillomatosis of European smelt ( Osmerus eperlanus ) reported in the Baltic Sea and the USA was shown to be of herpesvirus origin (Anders, 1989b; Morrison et al., 1996). Similar herpesvirus infection associated with epithelial skin tumours occurred in rainbow smelt ( Osmerus mordax ) in several lakes in the USA during spawning time, with a prevalence of 30% (Burke et al., 1989; Herman et al., 1997).…”

“…Currently, this family consists of 4 genera: Batrachovirus, which includes viruses infecting frogs; Cyprinivirus, consisting of viruses that infect carp and eels; Ictalurivirus, with viruses that infect catfish and sturgeon; and lastly, Salmonivirus, representing herpesviruses that infect salmonids , ICTV 2012. However, it is noteworthy that in addition to the viruses represented by these 4 genera, members of the Alloherpesviridae family have been detected in Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii (Doszpoly et al 2017), walleye (Kelly et al 1983), northern pike Esox lucius (Yamamoto et al 1984), turbot Scophthalmus maximus (Hellberg et al 2002), rainbow and European smelt Osmerus mordax and O. eperlanus (Morrison et al 1996, Jakob et al 2010, pilchard Sardinops sagax neopilchardus (Crockford et al 2005), Pacific and Atlantic cod Gadus macrocephalus and G. morhua (McArn et al 1978, McCain et al 1979, Marcos-Lopez et al 2012, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (Doszpoly et al 2013) and lake trout Salvelinus namaycush (Glenney et al 2016) that have yet to be assigned taxonomic position by the ICTV (see Hanson et al 2011 andEngelsma 2012 for overview).…”

“…Papillomatosis has been associated with herpesviruses in several fish species including koi carp Cyprinus carpio, smelt Osmerus eperlanus and rainbow smelt O. mordax (e.g. Hedrick et al 1990, Lee & Whitfield 1992, Sano et al 1993, Morrison et al 1996, but not all studies have been able to demonstrate an association with viruses (e.g. Lamas et al 1990) and some have identified papillomaviruses (Edwards et al 1977).…”
