Visualizing Mathematics: The Use of Block Models for Strategic Problem Solving

Abstract: The ability to visually manipulate problem quantities is often the key to understand effectively the concept towards proper solution process. Modeling blocks in a problem text is a visual mathematical technique that utilizes bar models to express relationship between known and unknown numerical elements. Facing a dismal performance among students entering high school with poor basic problem-solving skills, this study is an attempt to investigate how block model approach potentially reinforce students’ heuristi… Show more

“…Abdul-Rahman [15] emphasizes the use of visual language in explaining mathematical knowledge, while Al-Moatham [24] suggests exploring effective visual organizers in mathematics teaching. The recommendations from [3,13,21,25] collectively emphasize the importance of integrating visual mathematics into teaching strategies.…”

“…This study revealed a positive correlation between students' intelligence, visual perception skills, and mathematical achievement. Garzon & Casinillo [21] aimed to study the differences between two groups, one of which studied in the traditional method and the other used visual representation, and their study found out that there were differences in favor of the experimental group in terms of their ability to solve mathematical problems.…”

“…Based on the analysis of the presentation of content and examples in the form one mathematics textbook for the subtopic of Basic Arithmetic Operations involving Algebraic Expressions conducted by Khali and Rosli [26] found that the textbook on this subtopic focuses on formulas, examples, and exercises. The lack of exploration activities and the integration of mathematical tools such as dynamic software related to this subtopic causes students to not be well guided to understand the concept [29]. Other than that, students are not guided to compare the differences between four Basic Arithmetic Operations involving Algebraic Expressions [26].…”

“…Discovery is the main nature of inquiry [32]. Discovery learning happens when the main concepts and principles in algebra are studied and discovered by the students themselves [29]. The activities carried out by students will evaluate the pattern and then reach their conclusions.…”

“…Recent research underscores the critical role of visualization in mathematical problem solving [15,16]. Mathematical visualization is conceptualized as the process of constructing visual representations that elucidate the relations between quantitative data presented in the problem text [17][18][19].…”
