“…Development of Meta-Themes Throughout Stage One and Three. Meta-themes, also referred to as meta-inferences (T. C. Guetterman et al, 2020Guetterman et al, , 2021, are themes that are developed by moving beyond the individual studies and the separate datatypes and by comparing and contrasting the datasets (R. E. . “…out new insights beyond the information gained from separate quantitative and qualitative results'(M. D. Fetters et al, 2013Fetters et al, : p. 2143). Guetterman, Sakikibara and Fabregues have reviewed data integration techniques which use a joint display (T. C. Guetterman et al, 2021). These techniques include the recently published Pillar Integration Process (PIP) (R. E. Johnson et al, 2017), the Mixed Methods Data Linking Activity (M. D. Fetters, 2019) and the Joint Display Analysis (Onwuegbuzie & Johnson, 2021).…”

“…Fetters and Molina-Azorin (2017) expanded the view about integration in the MM integration trilogy where they identified 15 dimensions for integration. The recent release of a virtual special issue on integration from the Journal of Mixed Methods Research further illustrates the breadth of approaches to integration (Guetterman et al, 2021).…”

“…Unfortunately, systematic reviews have noted the relative lack of joint displays, and specifically called out the potential for their greater use (Bartholomew & Lockard, 2017; Younas et al, 2019; Fabregues et al, 2020; Fabregues et al, 2022). In a specific systematic review of visual joint displays, (Guetterman, Fetters, & Creswell, 2015) examined the prevalence of joint display use and described advances and innovations found in published studies. Among the papers featuring visual joint displays, a convergent MM design was found to be the most common (Guetterman et al, 2021), a trend seen also in an earlier paper about joint displays (Guetterman, Fetters, & Creswell, 2015).…”

“…As this is again an empirical issue, it requires investigating the procedures of researchers who claim to make such comparisons. One strategy for pursuing this question would be to do a systematic search for research that used joint displays (see Guetterman et al, 2021), and then to examine how these displays were created for studies that made comparisons between qualitative and quantitative results. The advantage of this specific approach would be that researchers who use joint displays are more likely to be aware of the recommended best practices in our field, and thus more likely to produce useful exemplars.…”
