Visuospatial impairment in Parkinson's disease: The role of laterality

Abstract: Asymmetry is one of the unique and mysterious features of Parkinson's disease (PD). Motor symptoms develop unilaterally either on the left (LPD) or the right side (RPD). Incongruent data are available whether the side of onset has an impact on cognition in PD. The objective of this study is to compare the visuospatial performance of RPD and LPD patients. Seventy-one non-demented, non-depressive and right-handed patients were categorized into RBD (n = 36) and LPD (n = 35) groups. Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure T… Show more

“…39,40 These studies, however, are based on clinical scales and questioners, and this might limit the generalizability of their results. The most consistent performancebased evidence suggest that RPD patients tend to have a specific impairment in some language domains, 36 whereas LPD patients show visuospatial impairments 41,42 and impaired vocal emotion processing. 43,44 All of these functions have clear lateralization in healthy subjects, suggesting that lateralized PD patients represent a good model to assess whether inhibitory control relies on a right-lateralized network.…”

“…The ROCF is a common neuropsychological screening method for visuospatial abilities [33, 34]. Particularly, the copy variant of the task measures visuospatial construction while the delayed variant indicates visuospatial memory performance [34].…”

“…Diszexekutív zavar Parkinson-kór-ban gyakran már a betegség korai stádiumában jelentkezhet, és a kogníció olyan területeit is károsíthatja, mint a komplex fi gyelem, a munkamemória, a viselkedésterve-zés, a feladatváltás folyamata [7]. Szintén gyakran talál-kozhatunk a verbális fl uenciát, illetve a vizuális és téri memóriát érintő eltérésekkel, amelyek megjelenése és súlyossága összefügg a Parkinson-kór aszimmetriájával [8].…”
