Vital NETosis vs. suicidal NETosis during normal pregnancy and preeclampsia

Abstract: Background: NETosis occurs in the context of infection or inflammation and results in the expulsion of decondensed DNA filaments called NETs (Neutrophil Extracellular Traps) into the extracellular environment. NETosis activates coagulation and contributes to the thrombotic risk of inflammatory diseases. To date, two mechanisms of NETosis have been identified: suicidal NETosis, in which neutrophils die after expelling the filaments; and vital NETosis, in which expulsion appears without altering the membrane. Hu… Show more

“…Although researches have proved that the formation of NETs improved the body's defense mechanism, NETs are believed to be capable of causing the body to break the pro-and anti-inflammation balance. 77,78 Apoptosis is cell shrinkage accompanied by DNA rupture and nucleus condensation. The whole cell forms apoptotic bodies through blebbing and other methods.…”

“…NETosis, an inflammatory cell death mode of neutrophils, manifests through the release of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) upon activation (Fang et al 2022 ). These NETs, comprising depolymerized chromatin and intracellular granular proteins, function as a potent means for neutrophils to trap and eliminate pathogens (Guillotin et al 2022 ). NETosis, distinct from apoptosis and cell necrosis, is induced by various stimuli, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, activated platelets, and chemokines.…”
