Vitamin C May Help to Reduce the Knee's Arthritic Symptoms. Outcomes Assessment of Nutriceutical Therapy

Abstract: Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage, changes in the physico-chemical properties of the synovial fluid and macroscopical modifications of the joint. Patients with Classes I and II of Knee OA can be treated with pharmacologic therapy. Vitamin C is key for both preventing inflammatory arthritis and maintaining healthy joints with OA. Aim: The aim of our paper is to verify the effectiveness of… Show more

“…Vitamin C is an important nonenzymatic antioxidant that helps reduce free radical damage. Recent studies have shown that vitamin C can have beneficial effects in patients with early KOA [ 49 ]. There are two isoforms of vitamin C transporters that are sodium dependent.…”

“…As mentioned previously, antioxidants and nutritional supplements showed good efficacy against pain in this survey. Some studies provide a rationale for the beneficial effects of antioxidant supplements as vitamin C, E, and others in the treatment of early cases of OA 34,8 . These studies indicated that the patients who received the antioxidants had long-term better results on pain however, other authors suggested that daily intake of vitamin C showed no statistical significance with lowered dysfunction for knee 35 .In general, vitamin C appears to be a safe and efficacious adjunctive therapy for pain relief in patients with OA 36 .…”

“…12,58 Recent studies have examined the role of vitamin C supplementation to potentiate patient outcomes following ACL reconstruction and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). 7,[59][60][61][62] Barker et al 62 sought to determine the effect of preoperative vitamin C supplementation on inflammation following ACL reconstruction. A total of oxidant group, receiving 500 mg vitamin C and 200 IU of vitamin E twice daily, or the matching placebo.…”

“…Similarly, some studies have evaluated the role of vitamin C supplementation in the outcomes of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery 7,59–61 . Behrend et al 7 investigated whether perioperative vitamin C supplementation impacts knee range of motion and risk of arthrofibrosis (AF) following TKA.…”
