Vitamin D as an immune modulator in multiple sclerosis

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The disease is characterised by inflammation with extensive immune infiltration, demyelination, axonal loss and damage of oligodendrocytes, presumably auto-immune in nature. The influence of environmental factors on the development and activity of MS has been known for a long time. Vitamin D and sun exposure are among the most important ones. Both serum vitamin D level and sun exposure independent of… Show more

“…Exposure to the sun and vitamin D are environmental factors that have been widely associated with MS development and activity [ 192 ]. Vitamin D seems to be an intermediary between the two since UVB produces this vitamin under physiological mechanisms [ 4 ].…”

“…25(OH)D3 is converted into 1,25(OH)2D3 (calcitriol), the active metabolite, through a second hydroxylation that takes place in the kidneys. Through binding to the intracellular vitamin D receptor (VDR), 1,25(OH)2D3 exerts its biological effects [ 192 ]. All immune cells express VDR, thus vitamin D influences innate and adaptive immunity, mainly shifting the immune response toward an anti-inflammatory one [ 195 ].…”

“…Multiple sclerosis (MS) is known as a neurodegenerative autoimmune disorder with a range of manifestations such as inflammatory lesions and demyelination in central nervous system (CNS) (1). It is responsible for substantial disabilities and causes considerable social and economic problems all around the world (2).…”

“…The PJNNS has excellent download metrics. The five most downloaded articles are listed in multiple sclerosis patients [2]. The second most downloaded article was a research paper submitted by authors from the Municipal Hospital in Nysa and the Opole University of Technology, both institutions located in Poland.…”
