Vitamin D Status and Changes in Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A Prospective Study of a General Population

Abstract: Objectives: A low vitamin D level has been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk but possible mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the association between vitamin D levels and 5-year changes in blood pressure, lipid profile and incidence of the metabolic syndrome, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Methods: A random sample of 6,784 individuals aged 30–60 years from a general population was investigated in the Inter99 study in 1999–2001. Vitamin D (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D) was measur… Show more

“…We may consider that the seasonal deficit in sunlight during the winter months may especially affect elderly patients with high cardiovascular risk, having more deleterious effect on them [20]. However, no association between vitamin D status and incidence of ischaemic heart disease or stroke has been confirmed in the general population [21].…”

“…The vitamin D receptor is found in most cells of the body and many tissues can convert vitamin D to its active form (1). Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are common worldwide and are associated with a number of common diseases, such as cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., hyperlipidemia and albuminuria), diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7).…”
