Bubaline pediculosis caused by the sucking lice, Haematopinus tuberculatus is a widespread and economically important ectoparasitic infestation of Indian water buffaloes. This lice infestation in buffalo is characterized by anemia, mineral imbalance and loss of performance but its pathobiology is unexplored. The aim of the present study was to investigate the oxidative pathobiology of bubaline pediculosis and its alleviation through the commonly used two antioxidants as an supportive therapy (N-acetyl cysteine and vitamin C). Twenty four Indian dairy buffaloes with severe bubaline pediculosis were allotted to the three groups (Group 1, 2 and 3).Another eight healthy animals free of any clinical anomalies and ectoparasites have been included as healthy controls (Group 4). Sucking lice infested animals (Group 1, 2 and 3) animals were given with single dose of ivermectin therapy @ 200 microgram/kg body weight Subcutaneously; In addition, group 2 and group 3 animals were treated with N-acetyl cysteine @ 12 mg/kg body weight and vitamin C@2g/ per animal po, respectively, once daily for 15 days. Before therapy (Day 0) and post-therapy (Day 28), haematological parameters like total erythrocyte count (TEC),haemoglobin (Hb), total leukocyte count (TLC) and Differential leukocyte count (DLC), and oxidative stress parameters like total antioxidant capacity( TAC), lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were evaluated on sucking lice infested buffaloes. Sucking lice infestation in Indian water buffaloes has showed severe anaemia, leukocytosis and along with remarkable oxidative stress response. Vitamin C given animals have demonstrated improved recovery from the bubaline pediculosis induced oxidative stress and reached normalcy post-therapeutically. Adjunct therapy of Vitamin C along with subcutaneous ivermectin has alleviated pathological damage in water buffaloes and hastened clinical recovery, while N-acetyl cysteine has been less effective in alleviating the oxidative stress. In future, therapeutic antioxidant studies should address the influence of the oxidative stress response in the host biological system.

Background: Ectoparasites are predominant parasitic infections among children. Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are transmitted parasites, mainly among school-aged children. Although, head lice are not a chief health hazardor or a vector for disease, they are a public social problem. The transmitted infections by a parasitic bite, may reach the blood which causes health problems for children and affects their health. Objective: To investigate the effects of infection with head lice on Immunoglobulin E (IgE), vitamin D3, Zinc, and blood parameters. Patients and Methods: Samples including skin swapping and blood samples were collected from 300 children who were examined at AL-Batool Maternity Teaching Hospital (AL-BMTH) and some medical centers. Skin scraping and swapping were examined microscopically for detection of the parasite. Blood samples were analyzed for immunological and blood parameter estimation, during the period from 1st October 2021 to the end of May 2022. Samples were sent to the parasitology and hematology laboratories in AL-BMTH to identify the parasitic infections and their effects. Results: The samples include 180 females and 120 males, 90 samples of the 300 were epidemic with lice infection, 48.9% of them were at age 1-5 years, 35.6% were at age 6-10 and 15.6 % were at age 11-15, 91% of the infected children were females, while only 9 % of the infected children were males. The blood analysis indicated that the levels of vitamin D and the mineral Zinc, were lower in children infected with head lice compared to the control, while IgE was higher. RBC and Hb showed a lower level in infected children than in control, whereas WBC was at a high ratio in most patients. Conclusion: Parasites cause many diseases in children in particular. They spread in rural and crowded places and affect the activity and vitality of children.

The present study was conducted to determine serum concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and selenium (Se) of Barki sheep reared in the rainfed area at Matrouh Governorate, Egypt. Forty apparently healthy Barki sheep (2-4 years of age) were randomly selected from Marsa Matrouh and El Negaila farms (twenty each) for this study. In addition to twenty healthy Barki sheep aged 2-4 years, obtained from Borg El Arab farm, represented as control. Animals classified into 3 groups according to water source: Borg El Arab as control (Tap water); Matrouh (Rainfall water); El Negaila (Rainfall Water). Water and serum samples were prepared for the detection and estimation of selected metals by using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Metal analysis revealed that Pb levels in different water samples were recorded above the EWQS of 0.01 ppm in following: El Negaila > Matrouh > control, Cd levels were recorded in El Negaila (RW) and Matrouh (RW) above recommended limit of 0.003, Se levels were recorded above maximum limit EWQS of 0.01 ppm in control (TW) followed by El Negaila and Matrouh however the levels of Cu, Zn, and Fe from the surveyed areas were below EWQS limits. Serum mineral analysis, Pb level was significantly increased only in examined sheep of El Negaila, Cd levels were higher in examined sheep of El Negaila and Matrouh however, Cu, Zn, and Fe levels were significantly lower compared to the control group. Conclusion: water analysis showed that Cu, Zn, and Fe concentrations were within the levels recommended by EWQS except for Pb, Cd and Se levels which need more attention. Serum analysis revealed high levels of Pb, Cd, and Se however deficient to marginal levels of Zn and Cu were detected in examined sheep. These results should provide a database for the mineral status of Barki sheep and their drinking water quality in Matrouh and El Negaila as well as evaluate environmental pollution status in this area.
