Vitamin E inhibits IL-4 gene expression in peripheral blood T cells

Abstract: IL‐4 plays a pivotal role in the development of allergic inflammation via induction of IgE isotype switching, increase of IgE receptor expression, promoting Th2 cell differentiation, and stimulating several genes involved in atopic disorders. Previous studies in human and mouse models have shown that high vitamin E intake correlates with low IgE concentration and reduced prevalence of allergic reactions. We, therefore, investigated the mechanism of the vitamin E effect on T cells. We show here that the natural… Show more

“…This process is believed to result in the production of oxygen-free radicals (Seaton et al, 1994). In addition to its natural intra-and extracellular antioxidant defense systems, the lung depends on nutritional antioxidants to inhibit the propagation of the damages from these free radicals (Seaton et al, 1994;Li-Weber et al, 2002). In vitro studies suggest that the deficiency in dietary antioxidants may result in T-helper cell differentiation and the promotion of the Th2 cell types (Li-Weber et al, 2002).…”

In vitro studies suggest that the deficiency in dietary antioxidants may result in T-helper cell differentiation and the promotion of the Th2 cell types (Li-Weber et al, 2002). Consequently, it has been hypothesized that inadequate intake of dietary antioxidants may contribute to the increasing frequency of allergies and asthma in industrialized countries (Seaton et al, 1994).…”

“…Third, a significant reduction in total serum IgE as well as significant attenuation of allergic airway inflammation were found in cRel -/-mice [14]. Furthermore, reagents that inhibit NF-‹ B activity suppress IL-4 production in peripheral blood T cells [15,16].…”

“…38,39 The antioxidant vitamin E can block binding of transcription factors to the binding sites and down-regulate IL-4 protein production. 40 42 However, the molecular mechanism of IL-4 gene transcription induced by HgCl 2 in mast cells remains unknown.…”
