“…The utilisation of the ALP assay was also shown to be insensitive in the present study. Using fish exposed to 17α -ethinylestradiol both Verslycke et al (2002) and Versonnen et al (2004) showed that plasma ALP and Ca assays have the same sensitivity to oestrogen effects. According to many authors this is largely because each Ca ion is bound to the phosphate groups on the VTG molecule (Gosh and Thomas, 1995;Fuentes et al, 2007).…”

“…The two plasma biomarkers were utilised as indirect measures of VTG circulating in the blood, based on numerous fish studies indicating a significant correlation between VTG and Ca, phosphate, Mg and Zn, respectively (Verslycke et al, 2002;Versonnen et al, 2004;Lv et al, 2006). In the presence of EDC's, high levels of the female protein VTG can unnaturally accumulate in male and juvenile fish (Tsai and Wang, 2000;Guerreiro et al, 2002;Gillespie and de Peyster, 2004).…”

“…No one knows exactly where the European eels (Anguilla anguilla) spawning ground is (Lokman & Young 2000;Ringuet et al 2002). The smallest larvae found in the Sargasso Sea, south of Bermuda, suggest that spawning of the A. anguilla as well as that of the American eel (Anguilla rostrata) occurs nearby (Wirth & Bernatchez 2001Mank & Avise 2003;Versonnen et al 2004;Dannewitz et al 2005;Palstra et al 2006). Meanwhile, the Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) spawning ground appears to be in the west of the Mariana Islands in the North Pacific (Katoh & Kobayashi 2001;Tsukamoto & Arai 2001;Ringuet et al 2002;Tseng et al 2003;Tsukamoto 2006).…”

“…[8] Elevated plasma Vtg was also found in eels below the Paris outfall. [9] Because eels may spend up to 20 years in the river before their spawning, migration-consequent reproductive disruption may account for some of the decrease in the European eel population. [9] The flounder, as a bottom-dwelling estuarine species, also provides a useful biomonitor of effluents in the rivers, which may potentially affect marine fish stocks.…”
