This qualitative research studies Cancun as a tourist destination and its community, assuming that the tourist identity is formed by its host. Cancun has struggled with migration since its founding, as people came to seek new work opportunities; such migration led to the generation of cultural diversity, and the absence of a perceptible cultural identity. In addition, this study aims to identify the cultural identity of the host community in Cancun as well as who integrates it. This study developed a theoretical framework of concepts for the community, with heterogeneous groups divided by 1) host community, 2) natives, 3) migrants, and 4) residents, which aligned with the factors of time of residence, occupation, and origin, resulted in the structure of the Cancun community. The categorization of the community will allow an analysis and proposal of the host's knowledge in a second phase. The outcome will allow a cultural identity model, contributing to the internal branding of the destination.

The pandemic catapulted Mexican cities into spaces of trauma and loss and as sites of state failure. For Maya migrants, state failure forms part of a history of settler violence and neglect. In Cancún, settler tactics promote a narrative of a city of immigrants. These tactics erase Indigenous urbanisms seeking to uphold Indigenous self-determination and nurture u kuxtal yéetel u máatsil máako’ob/convivencia, a Maya ethics of sociality and care based on caring for each other. I argue that the ethics of care and place-making entailed in convivencia help Maya migrants experience the metropole as a space of reciprocity, survival, and healing.

Objetivo: indagar sobre la conformación de las identidades entre los migrantes yucatecos radicados en Ensenada, Baja California, a partir de diversas interpretaciones que crean las personas a la luz de las dimensiones que conforman su herencia cultural maya, así como los ajustes, tensiones o reelaboraciones que experimentan al encontrarse en un sitio diferente al de su lugar de origen. Diseño metodológico: a partir de un paradigma constructivista que permite enmarcar la perspectiva del interaccionismo simbólico, esta investigación de corte cualitativo se inscribe en los llamados estudios de caso mediante entrevistas a profundidad con las hijas de una familia nuclear, además de un matrimonio joven, durante el primer semestre de 2023. El análisis de la información se apoya en una lectura horizontal y vertical a partir de las dimensiones que se abordan en este artículo. Resultados: aspectos como las razones para migrar, el lugar de destino, aspectos culturales como la comida yucateca y la identidad, se encuentran en continua reflexión y discusión entre los participantes de la investigación. Limitaciones de la investigación: dada la naturaleza del estudio cualitativo, los resultados presentados no pueden generalizarse y, más bien, buscan comprender un hecho social en particular, en este caso, los migrantes yucatecos radicados en Ensenada, Baja California. Hallazgos: se contribuye a una comprensión puntual sobre la identidad entre los migrantes yucatecos y cómo el parentesco, como teoría conceptual, permite poner en la mesa de discusión el papel que mujeres y hombres construyen en el marco de este estado fronterizo del noroeste mexicano.
