Vocalization of Scinax haddadorum (Anura: Hylidae), with further notes on the vocalization of the morphologically similar Scinax rupestris

Abstract: We describe for the first time the vocalization of Scinax haddadorum from its type locality. We also aim to establish an acoustic diagnosis for this species in comparison with the morphologically similar Scinax rupestris, for which we also describe additional note types of its vocalization that were not previously reported. The advertisement call of S. haddadorum consists of a single type of relatively short (<200 ms on average), multipulsed note and the call dominant frequency is restricted mostly to low freq… Show more

“…Scinax haddadorum is another Cerrado inhabitant, superficially similar to S. rupestris , but differs in some morphological characters and calls (Araujo-Vieira et al, 2016; Bang et al, 2017). Notably, this species from central Brazil is well supported (100% jackknife) as the sister taxon of a clade including species with a much more eastern distribution, including areas of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest (Fig.…”

“…Although Camera et al depicted this note in their advertisement call figures, they did not mention it in the text, which indicates that they probably misinterpreted it as being part of the advertisement call. Some studies have also reported other species of Scinax which may emit aggressive calls shortly after the advertisement call (e.g., Drummond et al 2007;Bang et al 2017;Lopes et al 2020).…”

“…Pulse rate (pulses/s) was calculated as "the number of pulses of a call / call duration". The within-pulse amplitude modulations, referred here as to pulse sub-units (sensu Bang et al 2017), were quantified from three pulses at the central portion of each call. Sound figures were generated in R platform v. 3.6.2 (R Core Team 2019) using seewave v. 2.1.6 (Sueur et al 2008) andtuneR v. 1.3.3 (Ligges et al 2018) packages with the following settings: window = Hanning; overlap = 85%; FFT = 256.…”
