Vocational services research: Recommendations for next stage of work

Abstract: Abstract-As the field of vocational services (VS) research matures, it is necessary to review its progress and identify any important gaps in measurement and methodology that may hamper future efforts. To encourage progress, we have identified (1) ways to increase consistency in measuring employment outcomes, (2) emerging patterns and lingering gaps in the range of variables and measures commonly used in VS research, (3) broader methodological patterns and needs in the area of study design and sampling, (4) in… Show more

“…Respondents also reported several types of assessments to be particularly beneficial during conducting and reviewing vocational evaluations following TBI. These included situational assessments, community assessments, cognitive demands analyses, and job shadowing, which parallels findings in other studies [ 30 , 64 , 66 , 79 , 82 , 83 ]. However, we also found that a very small percentage (5.4%) of VRPs use the McCarron-Dial System (MDS).…”

“…The WBI taps work behaviors that would be impacted by these functional limitations (e.g., social skills or work quality) and in turn has been shown to be correlated with neurocognitive domains typically impaired in schizophrenia (Evans et al, 2004; Lysaker et al, 2005; Lystad et al, 2016). As such, the WBI could be considered as a moderating/mediating variable of distal competitive employment outcomes (Drebing et al, 2012). Of note, in the current study evidence for the validity of the Work Habits scale was the most robust.…”

“…Schizophrenia is marked by significant functional impairment including in the vocational domain (Anthony et al, 1995; Carpenter and Strauss, 1991; Harvey and Strassnig, 2012; Razzano et al, 2005). The ongoing emphasis on the recovery of valued roles in the community makes vocational functioning an important treatment outcome for individuals with schizophrenia (Drebing et al, 2012). While there has been development of broad outcome measures of real world functioning in schizophrenia, specific assessment of work performance may identify additional treatment targets that can impact vocational outcomes in schizophrenia (Drebing et al, 2012; Lystad et al, 2016).…”

“…Work was valued for many reasons including financial gain, opportunities for social contact, creativity, sense of value and self-worth, all of which are previously documented (Drebing et al, 2012). However, the over-riding theme which recurred through many accounts was that of work-related personal identity and status.…”
